Blog 2: Event 1
One of the items on my bucket list that I am determined to do is to donate blood. When I was in the fourth grade I had a procedure done called an endoscopy. When I woke up two hours later, I had an IV in my arm and words cannot describe the pain it left me in. After that incident I have not been able to look at needles the same. For some reason, I can still do shots, and I can take care of cuts and gashes without hesitation or queasiness. In fact, my mom is a nurse and apparently I inherited her medical side, since I find surgery and things like that absolutely fascinating. However, I cannot watch as someone donates blood, I cannot have a needle in my arm for more than a second, and I cannot look directly at an IV. This is something that I am going to overcome while in college, and before I graduate, I will give at an American Red Cross Blood Drive. I know this bucket list item is something that will be beneficial to both myself and others and I think that is part of the reason why I am so determined go through with it. This is something where I just need to sit down and get it over without looking back. Similar to how Chris’ pursued his Alaska without looking back.
Reflection:
One thing that I have noticed is common among bucket lists is doing something that requires overcoming fear. I have not always been afraid of giving blood, but since the fourth grade, I have not looked at needles the same way. Understanding the how and why of donating blood has helped me better prepare to overcome this fear. Something that I have always heard growing up was, “we always fear the unknown.” Since I have researched and learned more about donating blood I have found that my fear of it is growing less and less and I know it is definitely something that I can achieve.
