When I first started creating my bucket list I had an endless amount of ideas running through my mind. As I continued to add items, I realized that I had not really looked into any of them. It was at this point that I decided to pick the first six items that popped into my head and dive into them.
The first item I picked was to see someone freed from human trafficking and/or forced prostitution. About two years ago the issue of human trafficking was presented to me. Since then, the idea of human trafficking and the thought that sex slaves exist has never left my heart. It is for this reason that the number one item on my bucket list is to see someone freed from human trafficking and/or forced prostitution.
Donating blood was the second item I chose. Ever since I woke up in the hospital with an IV in my arm after an endoscopy in the 4th grade, I have had this gigantic phobia of needles. The funny thing is, I find no other idea of health or hospitals disgusting. In fact, I find surgery fascinating, but the thoughts of any needle touching my skin, makes me squirm. I have always wanted to donate blood at a blood drive, but this phobia has keep me from doing so. I would like to overcome this fear of needles and donate blood, before the end of college.
So far, I have been out of the country three times and I always have one rule when visiting a different country and that is; never say no to something different (especially food). I have always had an interest in different types of food, art, and culture and I would like to experience as many different culture as possible before I die. That is why visiting every continent, besides Antarctica, is the third item on my bucket list
For 10 years or so, I participated in mixed martial arts (MMA). In the 8th grade, tested for and received my adult black belt in both taekwondo and hapkido. After training in taekwondo, hapkido, karate, judo, jujutsu, sambo, kickboxing, muy thai, and eskrima as well as teaching different martial art classes, I left martial arts in order to focus on school and my studies. Sometime in the future I would like to return to martial arts and begin teaching classes again.
It is not uncommon to for us as humans to have an attraction to dangerous activities. There is something about the adrenaline running through our veins that attracts us to these activities. With that said, there are three items on my bucket list that I have categorized in this area, and they are bungee jumping, skydiving, and wing-suiting and they are my next bucket list items.
The final big item on my bucket list is, to help someone else complete a bucket list item. I believe this is a great, unique item on my bucket list. I have always loved helping others and I believe this item takes that notion up a notch.
After briefly describing each of these bucket list items, I chose three that were really important to me to further research. During this time, we saw the movie into the wild, and in the movie Chris McCandles sets off to pursue his dream no matter the cost. This served as an inspirations and I tried my best to relate my bucket list item to something that Chris experienced.
One of the items on my bucket list that I am determined to do is to donate blood. When I was in the fourth grade I had a procedure done called an endoscopy. When I woke up two hours later, I had an IV in my arm and words cannot describe the pain it left me in. After that incident I have not been able to look at needles the same. For some reason, I can still do shots, and I can take care of cuts and gashes without hesitation or queasiness. In fact, my mom is a nurse and apparently I inherited her medical side, since I find surgery and things like that absolutely fascinating. However, I cannot watch as someone donates blood, I cannot have a needle in my arm for more than a second, and I cannot look directly at an IV. This is something that I am going to overcome while in college, and before I graduate, I will give at an American Red Cross Blood Drive. I know this bucket list item is something that will be beneficial to both myself and others and I think that is part of the reason why I am so determined go through with it. This is something where I just need to sit down and get it over without looking back. Similar to how Chris’ pursued his Alaska without looking back.
In the last two years, something was introduced to me that has never left my mind and that is the issue of human trafficking and slavery. There are more slaves in the world right now than there ever has been, and yes that includes the Civil War. In fact, there are over 27 million slaves in the world today. That’s almost 4 times the amount of Jews killed during the holocaust. The sad thing is that it takes place right here in the United States. This has caused me to add, seeing someone freed from human trafficking and slavery, to my bucket list. I know that this is not something normally seen on a bucket list, but it is something that is really important to me. In the past, I have worked with organizations fighting against this, however I have yet to have the opportunity to help someone immediately after they have been freed. I hope to accomplish this goal before graduating college, however I am not able to place a specific time on this. I do know that I will try all I can to accomplish this before I turn 25. In the movie, Into the Wild, Chris McCandless believes that society has been warped. In a sense, I feel as if I can relate to this. As it turns out, our society is heavily affected by human trafficking, however it seems like this is an issue that not many want to talk about.
I have always had a love-hate relationship with heights. I enjoy being high in the sky like in a plane or in someplace like Seattle’s Space Needle (which I would like to point out, is absolutely breathtaking), but I sometimes have a fear of losing my balance and falling to my death. In an attempt to break this love-hate relationship, I really want to bungee jumping, skydiving, and wing-suiting. I have found that these three items, bungee jumping, skydiving, and wing-suiting, are extremely similar and relate very well to each other, so I have included these three together. Each one of these items will require me to overcome a moment of extreme adrenaline and perhaps fear. This is similar to Into the Wild, when Chris McCandless decides to leave for his journey to Alaska. I’m believe, Chris felt an extreme wave of emotions when he first left his family. I’m sure he felt a combination of doubt, adrenaline, happiness, fear, peace, and possibly regret all at the same time. This was something that he had to overcome on his journey; and once he did, he seemed to be much happier. When I bungee jumping, skydiving, and wing-suiting, I too will be faced with a wall of emotions that I will need to overcome in order to complete my goal. When I look at these three items on my bucket list, I have come to the conclusion that it may be a good idea to complete these tasks before I am married and have my own family. However, these are not tasks that I would want to undertake alone, so I would like to be able to cross these off my list somewhere around my mid-twenties.
When I first started, it seemed like I could never narrow down my bucket list items, but after what seemed like an eternity, I believe I picked the right items to research. I have noticed that each of these items actually help describe my personality. They bring out the knowledge seeker, compassion, and the thrill seeker/fear overcomer of my personality. Though it seemed extremely tedious in the beginning, I have seen the benefits of analyzing my bucket list.
